 2.071 Mechanics of Solid Materials

In my graduate solid mechanics class, I became familiar with Abaqus FEA to analyze mechanical problems.

PEEQ in Tension

I used Abaqus to simulate a simple tension test with 6061 aluminum to illustrate Equivalent Plastic Strain (PEEQ) in the material.

PEEQ in Compression

I also used Abaqus to model a cylinder in compression undergoing plastic deformation. The cylinder is interesting because when there is friction, the contact area increases as the sides of the cylinder bend and press down into the plate.

O-Ring Compression

This is an animation of the stress in an o-ring as it is being compressed for assembly and then pressurized.

Beam Buckling

This is an animation of a beam buckling under compression.
